Sound going out of phase in V7
I’ve had several files that were stereo, playing fine, then when I close and reopen later they are directly out of phase, can’t hardly hear them. I got back to a single channel and the sound is fine. How does this happen?

This sounds very odd! How are you ascertaining that the tracks are out of phase, phase/correlation meters? If so by how many degrees are they going out?

The way I determined it was:
1. Listening – the sound went down to practically nothing.
2. Seeing – Opening the file in Sound Forge and I could they were the opposite of each other.
3. Correcting – I changed the files (and there were a bunch that were suddenly out of phase that had been playing) to mono files and the sound returned.
I didn’t use any meters.I think there is some problem with V7. The files were playing fine earlier but somehow were changed to out of phase. It happened with another veg I opened today. Until I get an answer, I’m converting all stereo files to mono. Someone posted a similar problem on another board.

Making sure I understand things correctly here. Are you saying that one track of a stereo pair, i.e. the left track is 180 dgrees out relative to the right track or vice-a-versa? If this is correct then you wouldn’t hear it correctly if played over a mono speaker setup or mono TV. It would sound low, thin and reedy probably as it self cancels. If you are listening to a correctly wired stereo speaker setup, speaker leads not incorrectly reversed on one channel, you would still hear it quite clearly even though the phases are opposed. What I can’t quite get my head around is that you appear to be saying is that Vegas is somehow inverting the phase on one channel only. I cannot see how this is possible. Just in case it isn’t something else have you checked the audio track ‘switches’ to make sure that the ‘invert phase’ switch isn’t on? This switch obviously forces phase inversion which could cause problems if the track involved is now mixed with other tracks. Loss of audio level in out of phase stereo tracks is normally only heard when the L + R tracks are summed together down to a mono mix. Is this how you are monitoring? The more info you can supply the better.
All I can add is that when we see these problems that in ninety percent plus of cases where there is out of phase audio it has been the result a] out of phase cabling during recording in the first instance, b] out of phase cables during ingest to system, and lastly, c] out of phase audio playback due to out of phase wiring in the edit suite.

Are you saying the actual files on the hard drive changed? During editing, Vegas does NOT change the files on the hard drive.

I’m saying that if the file was opened in Sound Forge the two channels looked like you placed a mirror down the center of the two tracks. What would be in the left channel was exactly the opposite of the right.

Well I’m lost. Because as Ed says Vegas, or SF for that matter only shows you a representation of what a file contains re data, neither program alters the files. Both programs are ‘non-destructive’ in their file handling unless of course you overwrite a file. If with a fresh boot of either program the files are being seen with inverted phase then that means the files are incorrect. This can only happen if they were recorded incorrectly or have been overwritten with their phase altered. So I can’t begin to work out what’s happened here if the above is not the case.

Yes, I’m confused too. If the original files were out of phase, it should have sounded that way the entire time.

I have a feeling that they must have been overwritten but I can’t figure out how. That is the reason for the post.
