    Hi all,
I’m capturing hdv footage that happens to have lots of audio distorition(shot in a club). I realize there’s nothing i can do about the distortion but my question is will audio distortion cause capture “hiccups”? I’m getting this on both a graid2 fw800 drive and, to a lesser extent, a raptor 10k drive. I’d like to use some of the quieter moments but the Vegas7 capture process seems to be letting me down.

I’m starting to get the feeling that vegas can’t really handle this type of capture alone, although it’s advertised as such. I’m using an HPxw4400 workstation with 2gb ram. Could it be something in my settings? The footage is great except for these pauses and it only seems to be happening with the loud stuff.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Assuming you’re capturing via firewire there shouldn’t be an issue – it’s just a data transfer. The bandwidth needed for HDV is about the same as DV, so there is no reason you should be getting dropouts, unless it’s system or hard drive related.

I use the Vegas HDV capture often and it has worked flawlessly for me.

hmmm, thanks Peter. Both computer and fw drive are new and seem to work fine except for this problem capturing some types of footage. Vegas doesn’t actually say I’m getting dropouts, there’s a counter that reads 0 dropouts but the capture footage just ain’t right, it’s glitchy. I mean a problem with both drives??? and they’re new – I guess it’s possible but…

I don’t know what to do. I tried it again last night, same deal. The footage in camera looks and plays great but something is happening on the way into the computer and no one seems to know what. If this keeps up I’ll have to spend more money on a new app. Just exasperated.

I’ve heard mention of a capture program called HDVSplit – either free or cheap – you could try that to see if you get the same results

Have you tried to capture to a different drive (even the system drive)?

When you say “hiccups”, do you mean while you are playing back your footage on the timeline – previewing? Have you tried to “print to tape” yet? Many systems will not “preview” without some stuttering. Print to tape to see how your footage really looks.

Is the Firewire port you are using on the mobo??

Many users have encountered problems with onboard firewire – myself included. Normally adding an additional PCI firewire card solves a lot of the hassles

Do yourself a favor and try Connect HD from Cineform. It’s worth the money.
