I bought a Panasonic PV-GS180 camera to use as a second camera a few weeks ago. I just got a 512meg SD card and tried out the digital camera mode. I actually got the card to use as a media device to transfer files between computers since I already have a 4 mp still camera. My problem is…once I took a couple of pics with the video camera the card will not be recognized in WinXP. I know that the camera formats the card to it’s own format…but shouldn’t I be able to put the card in a card reader and format it with WinXP to use it as data? On one computer (both running WinXP) when I click on the “removable disk” in windows explorer it just says “please insert a disk”. I know the reader works since it will read other cards. On the other computer, when I insert the card I just get the hourglass and it just sits there. Is there something I am missing here as far as being able to format the card to use it as data media?
    TIA

Just a thought but maybe the card needs to be finalized, similar to a miniDVD camcorder.

Look at p. 50 of your manual titled “Connecting Computer and Camcorder -Using Built-in SD Drive”.
Turns out it’s a bit more complicated than you thought 🙁

Thanks for the reply Mike. One thing I might try is to hook the camera up with the USB cable and try to format it through windows that way. I know the camera formats the card to it’s specific format type when you take pictures to the card but I would think that a person should be able to format it afterwards with windows to be able to use it as a storage device. My Fugi camera uses xD cards and I can just pull the card out of the camera, pop it in the card reader and everything works fine. I’ll do some experimenting and see what I can come up with. Thanks again.

Well after doing some experimenting I have found that for some reason the card reader that came with my SOYO mobo will not read this 512meg card. It will read a 32meg card I have though. So I installed the driver for an MMC/SD card reader that came with my Lowrance GPS unit and low and behold it reads the 512meg card just fine when plugged into a USB port. I guess the onboard card reader on the SOYO mobo must have a size limit on cards.
