Saving After Effects CS4 as CS3
Posted by Leen Jaspers on January 18, 2009 at 11:25 amHello,
this might be a stupid question but is it possible to save CS4 project as a CS3 project. Or can i export something that i can open in After Effects CS3?
Thanks!!

August 20, 2009 at 10:18 amI’ve found a way of doing that. It’s a rough way but worked for me.
Just open with “TextEdit” or “NotePad” one project file from cs3 and the one you want from cs4.
Copy this part from the cs3 file:

And paste over the same header in the CS4 file.
I don’t know if it’s needed but i’ve also changed the version number of the last save at the end of the CS4 file from 9 to 8.
Don’t forget to save the file from the text editor with a different name but with the .aep extension.
You won’t be able to open the file as a project but you can import it with the File-Import menu, you just won’t have the project settings but you can adjust that in 15 seconds.
Hope that helps. -

September 15, 2009 at 3:15 pmHello Jose,
I’m curious about this workaround and would like to make an attempt. Do you mind reposting the text to modify? It was too small to read!
Many thanks, -

September 15, 2009 at 3:58 pmHello,
If you click over the text a bigger image will open. I was going to paste the text but it gave me a error. If you’re not able to open the picture, the url is this https://i1.creativecow.net/u/148587/picture4.png
Paste it on your browser in the adress bar. -

October 9, 2009 at 5:06 amTotally Awesome!
I can verify that this also worked for me, very well as far as I can tell.
AEP Project file was 21MB with calls to both Knoll Light Factory, keylight, and Trapcode (stroke, starglow, particular). Everything rolled back to CS3 fine except for a few minor things with keylight, as another poster pointed out. That material looked slightly different.
Still…. such a life saver.
Thanks you, -JL -

October 23, 2009 at 2:37 pmDear all,
I need to make (regular) DVD with a movie that I have as few DPX sequences. Since the DPX files are 2K they are quite big and additionally their dimensions are quite unusual I suppose – 2200x1600px. (I know about the color issue, but I’ve already got over it).
As a result I want to make a PAL DVD – and my quetions are: should I use square or “dv-pal” pixel aspect ratio? I mean, which one is standard for most of regular users? Next thing – as the files are 2200x1600px, image aspect ratio doesn’t match the one of PAL frame (the DPX frames are actually slightly wider) – in few words – how should I proceed to place the original image in PAL format, mantaining the original aspect ratio and not having the image stretched/deformed?Every hint will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

October 23, 2009 at 6:42 pmJose, I can’t believe this…I NEVER knew this was possible…people ask me this all the time…sure as dave mentioned, maybe there are some things not supported…but man, to be able to access at least SOME of the animation in previous versions is huge…nice post!

can you give more detail on “changed the version number of the last save at the end of the CS4 file from 9 to 8. ”
My file is partly importing but with some big holes. Taking a second look at the doc in text edit. i was able to find what i think was a string of saves from the original file towards the end of the doc. but i cant seem to find where it records the version, so i can change the 9 to an 8 as you had suggested.
thanks a ton!
