Adding Text in Sony Vegas 7
I’m new to Vegas and I have been trying to add text to my videos, but very unsuccessfully. I’m converting VHS tapes to DVD and dividing up each dvd into 2 “parts”. I wish to have it display “part XYZ” at the lower right corner at the beginning of each part for a few seconds and then fade away. It was easy to do this in Ulead, but I’ve moved on becase that software didn’t provide me with as many options as Vegas.
My results are not very good because even after reading the manual, I can’t figure out how to make the background transparent. If I choose a predefined “layout” and add in my text, and then add it to the videotrack, it just overlays the video (so if I preview the whole project, I see 5 seconds of a colored background with “part XYZ” at the lower right corner with the sound playing, but my video doesn’t show up until after the 5 seconds).
I would greatly appreciate any help that anyone could provide me with.

For your purpose, put the text track above the video track (insert-video track if necessary). Go to the Media Generator tab, click on Text and click/drag the Default Text icon to this upper track. It will default to 10 seconds long. Place the cursor at the beginning or end of the clip and drag as necessary to shorten it if required. To fade in/out, place the cursor in the upper left/right corner of the text event. It should change to a quarter circle shape and will now say Fade Offset 00:00:00:00. Drag as required to create a text fade in/out.

The most common problem here is putting the title on top of the video instead of on a track ABOVE the video. If you put it on top of the video (i.e. on the same track as the video) it will REPLACE the video. Put it on a track above and the video will show in the transparent area.
