I am wondering if there is a way, when using the cookie cutter FX, to manually select an area to be cut (instead of using their preselected shapes such as oval, side oval, circle, square, etc.) The effect I am try ing to get is the “cloning” of a person, i.e. having a person duplicate then step out of his body and voila, there are 2 of the same person.

not sure if there’s a way to do it with cookie cutter, but the pan/crop feature will allow you to hand draw masks (as well as feather the edges).

No there is not. However, you COULD use the Bezier Masking in the Pan/Crop dialog for that.
