I know this is off topic, but I am hoping someone here knows something about this or can steer me toward a resource for information. My client is creating an art installation that will have video showing through 3 sections of a square grid and will be rear projected. I figure I can set up the video sections on 3 tracks and flip them horizontally and make the rest black. Does anyone know what type of material will work for rear projection? How about suggestions of projectors that can project a large area from a short distance?

    Any suggestions very welcome.

I don’t think you need to flip anything as most projectors (every one that I have worked with) have settings for front or rear projecting as well as ceiling mount setting which flips image upside down.

You can rear project on a wide variety of materials. It depends how you want it to look. I’ve seen people use bedsheets. I did an installation where I used paper that comes on long rolls. In the case of fabrics and papers you really need to experiment and do some tests to see if it works for you. You will get different degrees of brightness and texture.

If you want the brightest and sharpest possible images, then find the real thing… rear projection material designed specifically for that purpose. (never actually used any myself, but I’ve seen it used and it’s beautiful, especially if your not making the image too tooo huge. A net search for rear projection screen should hook you up)

    good luck

    Mary,

I used rear screen projection quite a bit.

    1. You do not need to do anything to the video. There is a setting in most projectors that will “convert” the video to rear screen.

    2. The best thing to do is to rent a rear screen. Most hotel will have them and they have the screen that is made for rear screen projection. You want as much of the video to show through as possible – that’s way you want want a screen made for rear screen projection.

    3. Use as bright of a projector as you can.

All the best with the project, James
