Just wondering how you would know (or test for) whether you had firewire 400 or 800 ports. Wouldn’t do much good to have FW 800 external HD is you plagged it into FW400 port – or would it?

Beware that if you DO have 1394b (800 Mhz) ports on an XP machine and you
upgrade to SP2, the port’s performance may be very bad (sets the port speed very
low). There’s a fix for it that a little google’ing will find.
