  OT — Question for people who work in PAL-land

  Hi all. My OT question: Do you know if it is possible to shoot good video of a PAL TV screen with an NTSC camera? (“Good” meaning without rolling, bars flowing through the image, etc.) I have an NTSC shoot coming up in the UK and I’d like to be able to capture some images this way. (Rights are not an issue with the material being shot in this case.) My guess is that the PAL TVs we want to shoot will be flat panels but I don’t know any more about them right now.

  Any thoughts are appreciated.

  PAL is 50Hz and NTSC is 60Hz (actually 59.94) so you can’t do this unless you have a camera with a “clearscan” (or similar) shutter mode. This allows you to set the shutter so that it matches the screen being shot. Hopefully you’ll have LCD or plasma monitors to shoot from.
  Also, you’ll get flicker from any flourescent lights as well, much more than you normally would, due to the 50 vs. 60 Hz issue.

  Thanks, Mike. Yes, we will have shutter control. I thought that might take care of it but I just thought I would check to see if I was missing something. Thanks for the tip on the lights, too.
