This question is for Edward, since he’s trod the same path I’m just going down now…

I’m currerntly working on what I hope will be my last EditDV project before forcing myself to learn Vegas.
I did the 30 day trial thing with Vegas in May and was very impressed. Similar feel, but so much more functionality, and I can see that things WILL be easier! I know it’ll take a while to become as productive as I currently am with EditDV, but once the learning curve is behind me…

During the 30 day trial, I was unable to find one of the features I use all the time in EditDV: adjusting the cut/trim point between two adjacent clips. Here’s how I work in EditDV to create a program using footage of an event from two or more cameras.
    1) Lay down the tracks and synch them up (usually to a camera flash)
    2) Select which footage I want from which camera and copy to a new track.
    3) Switch to Trim Monitor mode (short cut is 0). This presents two preview screens – the last frame of the outgoing clip and the first frame of the incoming.
    4) Use the F5 – F8 keys to move the trim point (back 10 frames, back 1 frame, forward 1 frame, 10 frames respectively).
    5) If I want to trim either clip indivdually (i.e. affect the overall length of the program), I can select using F9 or F11.

I use this A LOT to place the cut in exactly the right place (relative to music or speech or movement).
Try as I might, I couldn’t find the equivalent in Vegas. There’s a trim function (“Trim adjacent”) that allows you to do a similar thing via mouse dragging, but I couldn’t find shortcut keys to move the trim point a specific number of frames (e.g., 1 or 10) at a time.
Is there such a feature? If so, how? If not, what can you suggest as a working method for achieving something a little more precise than dragging via the mouse?

    Thanks

    use number keypad

    4 – move pixel left
    6 – move pixel right
    1 – move 1 frame left
    3 – move 1 frame right
5 – exit edge trim mode

    also

7 – go to event start
9 – go to event end

Adding to Fuddam’s suggestions. Select ‘Num Lock’ on the numeric keypad, use 7 or 9 or the keyboard brackets [ ] to go to the head or tail of a clip, the clip will now have a ‘red’ bracket at its end. Next place the cursor over that selected cut point between the two clips, hold CTRL & ALT keys together and using the numeric pad keys 1 or 3 you can “roll” the cut point to the left or right a frame at a time with a dual picture trim window. More key taps either way equals more frames trimmed. I dont know of any shortcut in Vegas to trim a set number of frames at a time. If you unlock the audio you can roll the video or audio cut points between the two clips independantly. A quick way of doing video or audio split edits.

Would you like a better option? Take a look at the multi-cam video at https://www.jetdv.com/excalibur

One thing you can do is put the cursor over a cut or dissolve, hold down CTRL-ALT, click and drag it.

Thanks all for your suggestions and info.
I’m planning to buy the product in September (no time to play before then) but this one keyboard shortcut was my only reservation. I thinbk I can now “buy with confidence” and finally eliminate my dependence on my Radius Firewire card.
