I’ve been searching the net, and you guys seem to have the most grasp on what I’m trying to do. Long story short, I need to be able to import a vector image from AI to AE. I just installed CS4 yesterday, and I’ve never used AI, so I know nothing about it. I don’t really NEED to for what I’m doing, though. I didn’t create the file, but I need to be able to zoom in pretty far to it. In AI, I can, but in AE, it looks terrible. What do I need to do? What should my settings be in AE? to import this correctly? i’ve never used vector images before. Any and all help is appreciated.

I’m saving the AI file as a .ai with High Resolution. I’ve also tried EPS. I’ve imported the file as footage, and also as a composition. No dice.

if you’re not making any changes to the file in the comp (animating or modifying individual elements), the import the ai file as footage, drop it into you comp and turn on continuously rasterize for the ai layer (the layer switch that looks like a little sun or spiky ball).

that will force ae to rasterize the ai file every frame, so as you zoom, in the edges will stay looking clean.

I will be animating it. Well, in a sense, I think. I’ll be turning the flat image of the world map into a glode, then using camera moves to “fly in” to different countries.

Also, when I click that button, it doesn’t change anything.

since you’ll be picking apart the logo, you will want to import the ai file as a comp… however, you will first want to separate parts of the ai file into layers in illustrator or the comp will contain only one layer that won’t be easy to separate in ae. it may be as easy as pulling the ‘map’ element on to a new layer and resaving the ai file, but you’ll want to separate any pieces that you want individual control of onto separate layers.

once you’ve separated the ai file, you should be able to import as a comp. then in that comp make sure that the continuously rasterize switch is on for each vector layer (if there are any nested comps, make sure the switch is on for any vector layers within the nested comps too).
