Hi guys, I have been lurking every once and awhile. I have really gotten obsessed with video editing. I don’t have much work to show for it. I just start projects and play around to learn new things. I am learning Vegas slowly but I am getting comfortable with it. There is so much you can do with it, seems like a lot to learn.
I recently put together a little music video of my 1st tattoo. Please let me know what you think of it. Video was recorded by my wife on our honeymoon.

    Thanks!

I am also interested in how I go about maybe getting in to school for this type of stuff. What courses would I need to take, etc.

Nice video with clean edits. I always like the 16:9 aspect ratio. Not much to complain about. It would have been nice to hear what the artist was saying, by turning the music down a little bit when he talked. Maybe add some on-screen text identifying the situation, location, date, the music, and the people involved. Lacking any audible conversation, the video seems like it runs a little longer than it has to. But that’s about all I’d change.

You’ve made a good choice by picking Vegas as your editor. I’ve used a number of PC based editors, including Premiere Pro, and I could never go back to anything less than Vegas. In fact, Vegas is literally the only PC software that my two Mac friends get jealous about. I think that says a lot, expecially if you know Mac people!

I don’t know anything about schools or classes, but I’m sure they exist. For me, simply becoming obsessed with NLE editing was enough to result in a rapid accumilation of skills. Get obsessed, stay obsessed, edit ALL the time, watch TV & movies with an eagle eye for techniques you can use (or avoid!) and have fun.

IMHO, make it shorter. mebbe 1/3 of original length, at least.

agree that would be good to hear speech from tattooist and/or victim being tattooed. Otherwise there isn’t enough development – just numerous zooms on the same subject.

good of you to put your work up to be crit.

    🙂

Good editing is about making good choices. This is not good editing, if you want an honest critique. If you are serious about getting better – no one is going to help you by lying. It was horrible.

OK, not to SOUND horrible, myself. Perhaps, we can all suggest ways to improve your edit. My first suggestion is to find a story. Write a script for VO. OK? “My first tatto…” etc.

…..and put your last shot at the beginning (establishing shot).Would have been nice to hear some ‘live’ audio.

Well, thanks, but kind of useless when you tell someone something is bad but have no explanation backing it up. Be a little more contributive and point out the reasons that back up your choice.

It’s too long and out of sequence. There’s no apparent story-line. Repetitive scenes. It was interesting to you but not interesting to us – a good edit creates that interest. So put a spin on it and re-edit. Like, how why you chose that design or why it happened there and at that time. Rethink the music choice. Write a script or throw some titles on the footage. A lower third with the artist’s name would be nice. Even repetitive scenes can be worked to your advantage “When the hell is this ever going to get done!” Find the story and you have found the edit… I hope that helps.
