I am possibly looking at trying Event/Wedding Videography. What is a good beginner camera that does not cost an arm and a leg (used). And where might I look for one other than on Ebay? I like the looks of the Canon XL1. Don’t know whether the viewfinder is better, or flip open side monitor one, like I think that’s on a Sony, or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Definately the VX2100 (Sony) Fantastic in low light—you could also find the predecessor model the VX2000. I would stay away from the XL1 for event/wedding photography—–ergonomically its a pain and it isn’t that good in low-light shooting situations.

That’s the first negative comment I think I’ve heard about the XL1.

I use the Cannon GL2 and so far I’m satisfied. I wish it had more than one audio input and they were XLR’s, but I can use a mixer. As far as picture goes, it has a built-in neutral density filter and I am very pleased with the results.

You basically need to just figure out what your needs are and figure out your price range. Will you be able to generate enough money to cover your cost? (I say this because you said “I am possibly looking at trying Event/Wedding Videography.”

I also use two consumer $300 cameras for more angles and views. Even though the picture is not quite as good (because they don’t have 3 CCDs), they’re still better than nothing. And they make me money!

I have used the XL1 for years doing weddings and events. I will agree that the VX is probably better in low light (we put a light on our camera for receptions). However, the XL1 is a good camera and one of the few that can handle 4-channel audio input which is handy on occasion.
