Missing template
Posted by Ozvideo on February 10, 2006 at 5:25 amI also tried to render a video clip using Vegas 5 in WMV format but I kept a getting the message that there was no template for this codec. Very strange since I had used it before. I used Device Manager to locate the codec’s that are installed on my machine & could not see one for WMV. I have downloaded the codec from Microsoft but reinstalling them didn’t help. I have even tried reinstalling Vegas but nothing works.
Any ideas?

February 10, 2006 at 8:47 amJust to confirm, you are selecting Windows Media Video V9 (*.wmv) in the Save as type dropdown box first and then going into the Template dropdown box for options, aren’t you?

February 10, 2006 at 10:46 pmI click file>render. The save as type usually defaults to MPEG2. I press the down arrow under save a type & select windows Media Video V9 (.wmv). As soon as I make this selection I see displayed under Description ‘No existing templates support this media.’

February 11, 2006 at 2:46 amThat is definitely very strange. All I can suggest at this point is to email tech support or do a reinstall.
One possible thought. When I get the “default template” and click the “about” box, I get the following message:***********************************
Sony Windows Media Technologies File Format Plug-In
Version 1.0 (Build 1583)F:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas 5.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\wmfplug3\wmfplug3.dll
Built using the Microsoft Windows Media Format 9 SDK
***********************************Do you have this dll in this spot?

February 11, 2006 at 3:29 amWhen I click ‘about’ I get a similar message showing the location of my file.
I did a search for ‘wmfplug3.dll’ & found it listed 3 times for Vegas 5 including at locations like E:program files\sony\Vegas 5.0\FileIO Plug-ins\wmfplug3
What size is your DLL? I have it listed a total of 5 times when DVDA is included.
It I knew which was the correct DLL I suppose I could just copy it into the same location that the ‘about’ says its located.

February 15, 2006 at 12:13 amWell after not trying anything for a few days I went back to the problem but this time from a different angle. I reasoned that the WMV codec was from Microsoft & then recalled that XP comes with Movie Maker inbuilt. I took an a avi clip into MM & saved it to WMV & it worked. This only confirmed my opinion that the codec was installed. Back into Vegas again & again the same clip but this time the codec is listed. What happened? What fixed the problem? I have no idea unless MM had some effect in moving a file that Vegas in the wrong place. Anyway it’s fixed & this only goes to show just hoe perverse computers can be. Thanks for the help.
