  • My AfterEffects CS4 can’t use 3D PSDs from PhotoShop CS4

Posted by Blahtor Magnus on January 9, 2009 at 11:30 am

I have PhotoShop CS4 and AfterEffects CS4 on my machine.

My problem is that I can’t get the 3D-PSDs from PhotoShop to work as real 3D objects in Aster Effects CS4.
They are imported from obj files in PhotoShop and then saved as 3D PSDs.

Every time I import a 3D-PSD from Photoshop, it just stays 2D in After Effects.
You can turn on the 3D in AfterEffects but the file stays flat and acts like a regular pseudo-3D layer.

    I followed this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sor1ac-cp2M
step by step, but the PSDs that PhotoShop exports still act as 2D layers in AfterEffects.

    Why?

Over on adobe.com, the general advice is to check the online documentation carefully. it’s all explained in the manual. I haven’t watched your tutorial.

Lots of CS4 assistance on this link:

When you import your PSD,you get a dialogue asking if you want to bring in your PSD as separate layers or as a flat image etc. Somewhere in there is a checkbox somewhere that says “live 3d photoshop comp” or something to that effect.

This is most likely the problem.

Hi, I am well familiar with the import dialog.
Importing a 3D-PSD is thoroughly explained in the video tutorial from my firt post and I followed this tutorial step by step.
I always set the imported PSD to “Composition” and I always check the Live 3D button.
Still, the 3D PSD used to stay 2D.
I found the reason why – when you import the 3D-PSD it creates several separate elements. One of those elements is a folder, named “Solids”.
I already had a folder, named “Solids” in my composition and this was causing the problem.

Now I have another question: I am only able to view the iported 3D-PSD item through the Active camera View.
When I switch to “Top View” or “Left View”, etc., I no longer see the object. Only it’s marked area is visible. This makes positioning the 3D-PSD in the AE 3D world a trouble.

    Is this normal?
Is there a way to be able to see the PSD in it’s full 3D-ness from all views?

The biggest problem is that I can get 3D by loading a PSD in a fresh composition.
But when I try to import a PSD into an already existing comp, it just doesn’t work.
    What could be causing this?

AE 9.0.1 apparently solves some 3D PSD issues. Hopefully that’ll solve your current affliction.

    Good Luck

    I will try to upgrade.
Will write back if this has been of any help with the 3D issue.

    I just upgraded to 9.0.1
    Didn’t help.

I still have a problem importing a 3D-PSD into an already existent composition.
The only way to make it work is to import the 3D-PSD into a fresh composition.

I don’t know how to combine two compositions, though.

[Blahtor Magnus] “I just upgraded to 9.0.1

Bugger!!! Thanks for reporting back. I don’t have CS4. It’ll be good if folks can check the routine out on their machines so that we know if it’s a bug or machine-centric.

[Blahtor Magnus] “I don’t know how to combine two compositions, though.”

Well, there isn’t a quick, one-button solution for that other than nesting but then you’ll lose the parameters that you need.

So it’s back to manually copying and pasting layers across compositions. Not too debilitating if you don’t have too many layers.

    Cheers

Roland, chances are that I am doing something wrong.
Problem is that I don’t see what exactly…
I tried everything, read every tutorial, tried every tweak. No result.
it still gives me trouble when i try to import a 3D-PSD of a drum set in my composition.
Same thing happens when i try to import another 3D-PSD, so the ptroblem is not in the files.

Here is one possibility: I am using a composition file that was created in CS3 and that the CS4 automatically converted to its own format.
So now it is a CS4 composition and should behave like one. But hwo knows…

I will try to make a video, showing the problem but with my spoken English, it’s gonna be a disaster, hehe.
