All of my video work ultimately ends up on DVD. I’ve been saving the raw video footage in DV for editing in Vegas, however, I’m running into storage issues. If I render my raw footage in DVD-compatible MPEG-2, and edit these files in Vegas, will their be a loss in quality when I render my final cut? Is there anyway to get Vegas to render the final cut without re-encoding the video if it is already in the correct format?

By the way, I’m using Vegas 5.

    Thanks,
    Ben

    …will their be a loss in quality…

Most definitely. First of all, DV is a 4:1:1 signal while MPEG-2 is 4:2:0. Check out Adam Wilt’s site if these numbers mean nothing to you.
Secondly, MPEG-2 further compresses the original DV signal by at least a 4:1 margin, if not more. Bring thuis back into Vegas and, notonly is is harder to edit, it gets recompressed, further deteriorating the signal.
If you’re short on storage space, buy another hard drive and an external box. You can use either Firewire or USB as both work fine. This is an inexpensive option that will more than pay for itself in improved picture quality in the final product.

While there ARE programs that will combine Mpeg2 files without recompression, Vegas is not one of them. NO program will avoid recompression if you make any changes to the material besides cuts.

The most economical storage for DV continues to be to keep your tapes and recapture, which you can easily do if you keep your .veg files.
