China is a PAL country, so make the DVD using the PAL templates.

You do realize, of course, that Chinese law requires all videotapes to go through the “Ministry of Culture” to make sure there’s no objectionable material on them:

I deal with China all the time. My wife is from Shanghai and we have a home there. I send DVD’s and VCD’s all the time and have never sent a PAL version. I did send a VCD once in both PAL and NTSC version and asked them which was better. The reply was no difference.

Unlike here in the USA I find the players and TV’s in China will do both.

Is this a commercial DVD or “home movies”. There’s some truth about what the post above says but if the client is sending 1 or 2 to family I wouldn’t worry too much. If customs does open it and find objectional material, they’ll just destroy it. I never had that problem.

    David and Allen,

thanks for your information. The video is just a wedding, so I do not think it shuld be a problem with content.

The client did not indicate that they needed special formats either as they send DVD’s over (and they can watch them in their computers also.
I just thought i was ask here and see if i had the correct info, so… I might give them a PAL version just in case…

I would assume I render the finished project as mpeg 2 video stream for PAL dvd architect and the audio as normal (AC3)

any settings that i should know about?

    Thanks!!!

I always use the PAL DVD Architect template.

In DVD Architect, also make sure you select PAL as your project setting.

In my situation, it was a sales video for a company looking for Chinese Government approval to begin operations in China. We were sending over a BetacamSP master to be duplicated.

There’s no way we were going to try to “sneak” it through customs. That wouldn’t be a very good way to make a first impression 🙂

[Dave Felder] “China is a PAL country, so make the DVD using the PAL templates.”

As with all other PAL countries, DVD players in China (in my experience) play NTSC DVDs fine. Since recoding an NTSC DVD to PAL will change resolution, aspect ratio and frame-rate, I would expect (possibly minor) reduction in quality if you shoot in NTSC and create a PAL DVD.

Create a DVD in the same format you shoot in. If you shoot NTSC, make an NTSC DVD. It will work fine in China or any other PAL country.

    Hi Dave
Oh Yes, in your case with the BetacamSP master you were correct. But for Wayne and me, it isn’t any problem.

Walking through customs with my VX2000 was a breeze and they didn’t even ask to see it but with Betacam 3/4″ you should have a permit, which I understand is easy to get especially if you’re doing work for a Chinese company.
