  • Adjusting video clip speed without changing project speed

What I want to do is to adjust the playback speed of individual clips that I add to the project so that as the entire project plays back at a set rate, the clips will play at different rates without affecting the entire project. I won’t be using the audio of the clips, so audio adjustment of the clip isn’t necessary (if it speeds-up or slows-down with the video, it doesn’t matter since it won’t be used).

Can this be done within the project, or does the speed of each clip have to be pre-adjusted before being placed in the project timeline? If so, how do I adjust the speed, then output it to playback at a normal framerate, but that framerate shows it going fast (or slow, depending)?

I forgot to mention it in my post, but I’m using Vegas 5+DVD on a Dell Dimension 8400 (P4, 1.4MHz w/HyperThreading, & 4GB RAM) running Windows XP Professional.

There are several ways to adjust the spped of timeline events.
If you want the speed to be constant for the entire event, then just Ctrl/Drag the edge.

If you need variations in speed, add a velocity envelope by right-clicking>Insert Envelope>Velocity. Double-click on the line that appears and you can make points that can be dragged around to create the speed changes.

Take a look at Vol 1 #9 of my newsletters for the article on adjusting the speed of a clip.

and you can change the playback rate by right clicking on the video clip ( video track) in Vegas TL – properties then you can use the playback rate and undersample rate ..

undersample is different then playback rate ..

if you undersample 0.50 then the clip will playback at 15fps but it is not slow mo .. it will play everyother frame twice = clips remains same length

where as playback rate at 0.50 will playback in slow mo = it will playback everyframe twice = clip is longer

For my information – when woulld you want to use ‘undersample’? Does it give it a strobe effect?

you would use it for effect ..
i use it to give persons a slight animated motion/feel .. so i’ll set it to pprox 6-8fps ..
also setting to to around 21fps ( vegas will double some fields to equal 30) just give a slight “off feel to subjects … note that if you have properties set to interlace it adds extra fields ( usually not both fields unless you are running a low fps .. if you have it set progressive then it does add frames ( both fields )
