Adtech’s Instant Video MPX a-to-d converter
A friend without much money would like to move VCR videos into his PC, to eventually make DVDs. He is in Europe and uses all PAL.
This hardware apparently connects to a USB port and is an analog-to-digital converter, for around $70 which is wihin his price range.
Any knowledgeable opinions on this, please? (Does it work, reasonable good quality, etc.?) Any other low-cost options (remember his low budget!)

The best advice you can give him: STAY AWAY from USB devices for capturing video. Stick with firewire and a convertor/camera/deck.
A firewire card is cheap. The most expensive component will be the convertor (unless he already has a miniDV camera that supports pass-thru). But you ARE talking more than $70 to gain several advantages: Standard capture to standard DV-AVI files, easy setup, better quality, fewer headaches trying to make things work or keep things in sync (usually a BIG problem with USB solutions)…

Thank you for your prompt reply. I believe his primary use will be to take ordinary VHS video (PAL), and essentially digitize it and save it in the PC; eventually to convert to DVD.
Any recommendations (on the inexpensive side?)
