Lost in HDV

It’s my first attempt at capturing HDV footage from a Sony Z1 in Vegas 6. Vegas sees the camera for regular DV capture but says “No Device” if I go to HDV capture. I can’t find a place to link the device in Vegas nor a menu change in the camera that works. What are the settings needed, please.

Thanks for any help. I’m sure it is something simple I am missing.

I finally got the camera firewire to “HDV” so now I’m looking for a Vegas setting.

If you have Vegas 6.0b, it should prompt you when you go into capture.
For DV, select the topmost setting “Use external video capture application”
For HDV, use the 2nd setting “Use internal video capture application”

You can also set it under “Options/Preferences” chooosing the “video” tab. De-select the “Use external video capture application” for HDV.

I did do that and it STILL does not work. It says there is no device.

In your device manager, under “Sound, video and game controllers” you should have a “Sony D-VHS Device”. If not, then you need to manually install the driver for it. This is a common issue on WindowsXP Pre-Service Pack 2 systems. I personally, do not use SP2 and prefer SP1 due to many 1394 issues that have been reported with SP2.
You can also use the manual install method with Windows2K.

Once you get setup, it should be smooth sailing.

Thanks a lot. I just found instructions that got it working:
1. Plug in Camera
2. Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager
3. Locate AVC/Subunit in the Device Manager
4. Right click, choose Properties
5. Choose Update Driver, and DO NOT let Windows go searching. Choose “I’ll find it myself” (or whatever the dialog actually says)
6. Browse to Sound, Video, Game Controllers to find the driver
7. Locate Sony in the list of Sound, Video, Game Controllers
8. Open the first Sony in the list, and select the DVHS driver as the driver for your camera.
