good titles
is there anything for pc comperable to apple motion? ive used bluff tittler, but is is not really in the same league (although it is as easy to use-thats a plus)

I don’t know Apple Motion so I can’t compare… but:

Graffitti light comes with Vegas but only runs in standalone mode.

Zaxwerks ProAnimator and Ulead’s 3D Studio are my favorites. You would be surprised what you can do with the tools already included with Vegas.

I have tried their demo and it’s not bad. It appears as a plugin in Vegas We use Inscriber Titlemotion Pro and create a lot of titles off-line and then bring them in to Vegas.

I’d be interested to hear opinions on this topic.
Although I can see that CG Plus is a comprehensive titler, it costs almost as much as Vegas 6, and although I guess it’s worth it to those for whom these looks are needed, it seems way out of proportion, considering that the built-in Vegas titler can produce very impressive looking titles once you get your head around things like keying, parent/child etc.
… or am I out of touch here?

You are dead right, it is a bit pricey but if you are doing fifty or so repetitive graphics for a regular show each week it has strength in as much as that you can work with pre-defined templates, just change the data and save. The reason I didn’t go for it is that someone can be doing all our race graphics, lower thirds, grids, results etc on one workstation while another operator is editing. For us weekly deadlines determine show delivery time and the more I can spread the workflow around the better. Two jobs being done at the same time is more efficient. I agree, given the time, you can do some pretty amazing titles on Vegas using a number of various different tools. But for pure speed you cannot beat a keyboard driven CG whether it’s in a linear suite or NLE room.

There is nothing on the PC that can match Motion as far as ease-of-use and templated presets.
Your only choice is to roll your own with After Effects and take the learning curve heat.
There are canned effects in Motion and Livetype I can’t imagine how I’d recreate by hand in AE. Downside, the Apple suite can be difficult to modify so you tend to notice the same canned effects.

I found a 60 hour After Effects class at a Dallas junior college for $90 with an excellent instructor. It eases the pain and you can get help when needed.
