I rendered a project 1 hr and 25 minutes long. I set to dvd ntsc and went in and set to dual pass for optimum quality. After eight hours of rendering, the file size is only 3.7 gig. I thought an hour of video is around 4.7. Is that just for an avi and not an mpeg 2? Im glad for the size, because i can now put this project on one disc, but am i missing something?

1 hour of video in DV-AVI is about 13 Gig.

1 hour of video in MPEG2 is, basically, whatever size you want it to be – i.e. 4.5 Gig, 3.5 Gig, 4 Gig…. It will vary depending on what you use for the bitrates.

To put it a different way, you CAN fill a DVD full with a one hour program. You can ALSO fill a DVD full with a two hour program. Naturally a different bitrate is required for each.

Thanks for your response Ed. What settings in vegas 5 do I need to select for maximum image quality? I thought I did this. The bitrate was set and dual pass set this is why I cant understand the size issue I had, I suppose the bitrate fluctuated down to 6000 or something resulting in this size. Any more info on this would be great.

The “default” settings will allow for nearly 90 minutes of video. I have a bitrate chart in Vol 1 #7 (I think) of my newsletter. Just adjust the bitrate to match the length of your video.

Thanks again Ed. The chart is great. So I set a constant bitrate to get maximum quality?. Do I still need to use the template set at dvd ntsc? I am using workshop for menu creation and burning

I’ve been using 2-pass VBR using the number from the chart as teh AVERAGE with the max set to 8,000,000 and the min set to 2,000,000.
