    Harmonics like that are usually pretty easy to simulate with simple sine wave generators. You’re not realy trying to emulate an actual Chaldni plate system, just get timed and intersecting Lissajous patterns. There are numerous Lissajous generators for PC, must be something for the Mac out there. There are many Shockwave, Java, and Flash widgets will do them.

    Thanks! I’m checking this stuff out. It seems right up my ally. Planning on picking up that issue of MAKE when I get the chance as well.

    Now, I haven’t had ample time to search so I haven’t found any Mac compatible Lissajous generators. I’ll keep searching though.

    In the mean time, I’m wondering, are there expressions which produce an oscilloscope effect? Would you just use sine and cosine expressions on solids (i.e. a solid circle) to produce the effect? Could you use an expression to morph a solid circle into slightly different shapes?

    I don’t mean to ask so many questions, but I’m experimenting and could use a hand from someone more knowledgeable.

    I’m not entirely familiar with the patterns you’re trying to develop. If you are (extremely) familiar with them and the mathematics behind them then I would recommend that you look into Adobe’s Pixel Bender Toolkit.

    This will allow you to develop your own generator effect for use in After Effects CS4 (or Photoshop, or Flash).

    If you have shader programming knowledge that would definitely help you (or any programming knowledge)… or if you know the mathematics behind it and want to explain it in depth perhaps someone with more programming chops would be willing to give coding a Pixel Bender kernel for you (I might be able to help, but I wouldn’t presume that I’d be the best one to do so).

    I’m not familiar with the math. It’s interesting but I’m just looking to produce the visuals that correlate with it and was hoping that there was someone a few steps ahead of me.

    I’m trying to figure out how to recreate this. I’ve applied a sine expression to a brush with a write-on effect. But I’ve still got a ways to go before I can produce something similar to the video above.

    I hoping this is a clearer more manageable question than my previous post.

    Easiest solution is to acquire an oscilloscope and feed the x and y inputs from a pair of signal generators. Shoot it.

    There has to be a free ‘scope emulator that runs in Flash.
