For paint programs, there’s The Gimp and Paint.net

As for compositors, I don’t know of any free ones besides Zwei-Stein. Avid has a free editing program that may have limited compositing capabilities, but I don’t know for sure.

You can pick-up a very cheap copy of Photoshop Elements here:

Keep your eyes open for computer and video magazines that have cover CDs/DVDs. I have picked up numerous full version software packages this way. They are usually a version or two older than the latest release, with special offers to upgrade.

I don’t have many of the magazines around any more, but I did check the CDs that came with them. Below is a listing of some of what I have collected and from which magazine:

    Computer Arts
    – Black Magic 2.0 (convert B&W photos to color)

    PC Answers
    – Paint Shop Pro 5

    Quick & Easy Windows
    – AutoSketch 5
    – 5,00 royalty free photos

    PC Tools
    – Movie Edit Silver
    – Pure Motion EditStudio 2
    – Advanced X Video Converter
    – particleIllusion SE

    3D World
    – Truespace 4.3
    – Six Training Videos

    Digital PhotoEffects
    – Great tutorials on Adobe Elements, Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro
    – 16 video lessons for the above programs

I will usually hit our local magazine store once a week on my lunch to check out what is new. I would recommend you to do the same (maybe not once a week though).

    Hope this helps…
