  erase or mask layer in comp

  Hi all!
  I have a comp of two layers in AE CS3: video and a slideshow on the wall.
  In the video footage we have a bus moving in foreground.

  

  So, how do I manage to erase parts of the slideshow that supposed to be behind the moving bus?
  I know I can create a mask with motion, but in this case it’ll be very difficult.
  “Erase” tool works on a layer view only, but I need to see them both when painting.

  Rotoscoping with the mask tool would be my first suggestion. This could potentially be as easy as creating one rough mask on a separate layer for the bus when it first starts to obscure the slideshow, then motion tracking the bus and applying the data to that layer. Then use this layer as an alpha inverted track matte for the slideshow footage. However, you will probably need to tweak the mask after you’ve done this.

  If you don’t want to deal with that then you could duplicate the video footage layer, paint in the bus frame by frame, then enable the ‘on transparent’ switch and use this layer as an alpha inverted track matte for the slideshow footage.
