  • SILLY Photoshop Question. Layers drift to center. GRRRR!

Posted by Paul Whishaw on May 21, 2005 at 8:28 pm

I have some photoshop files with multiple layers of photos with cut out ellements. When I put the cut out bits into the timeline. they drift to the center instead of remaining in their original position. I must have changed a setting by accident because I don’t recall this happening before.

What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

Import PSDs as projects instead of footage and they’ll keep all layers in place. Importing PSDs with sets within them will make each set it’s own comp in AE, which is a handy way to organize an AE project before you even open AE. If your PSD layers have a lot of Photoshop effects/styles/blending modes, you’ll likley need to make rasterized copies of some layers to get what you need in AE.

Adobe has 7 pages of tuts, one of which will help you.
    https://studio.adobe.com/us/tips/main.jsp

Choose, After Effects from the drop down here:
Then you need to log on, or register (its easy).

And here is an article that should help:

“Layer it on with Photoshop layers”

    Excerpts below:

Importing the Photoshop file as a composition will keep the layers intact.

To maintain the correct positioning of the layers, drag the entire folder to the Comp view window or the Timeline window (Figure 3). If you try to select all of the layers inside the folder and drag them independently, they will center in the Comp view window instead of maintaining their correct positions in relation with one another.

This kind of blows. The import window does not give me the option of importing as ‘project’ and dragging the Photoshop comp to the timeline is not very helpful as there are many individual elements I want to animate in the main composition. It would be very tricky to have to open the PSD composition to make any changes that I want to see in the main comp (or am I missing something, very possible).

I swear to god this didn’t use to happen. I have very clear memories of opening numerous layers and having them all maintain their positions relative to the PSD.

    Am I on crack?

[import window does not give me the option of importing as ‘project’
As the previous post points out, I used the wrong term…open PSDs as “compositions”, not “projects” or footage.

[tricky to have to open the PSD composition to make any changes that I want to see in the main comp]
Not really…just turn on the pref called something like “synchronize footage in other comps”, put your main comp in one window and the one(s) you’re working on in another…the changes you make in your work comp(s) will be reflected in your main comp window so you can see what you’re doing. But, that’s really only an option if you’re working on a reasonably fast machine.

    [Am I on crack?]
    Yes.
