Note: every time i play my video footage (in .avi format) which im editing, on the top right corner under info dialog box its says ‘fps:(29.7) real time’, as soon as the video slows down its show a messga ein red as ‘ fps (0.14/29.7) not realtime’!!!!!!

If you are hitting space bar to play the video, then it is normal that it will not play at real speeds….are you hitting space bar, or are you performing a Ram-Preview ???

Also, things can slow down depending on what you are doing….certain effects can demand a lot of processing….particles and certain lighting effects can really slow you down. A graphics card with more ram may also help..

    Ansab –

I don’t know the answer to your problem, but here is a site which has lots of solutions to varying AE problems:

    I hope it helps out.

yes i hit the space bar to preview….RAM preview is faster but than again RAM preview….starts the preview from the begining…so what if i want to preview from the middle of the composition.???

i have vista do you think going back to XP for AE 7.0 will help me with teh performance????

Ram preview begins from the start point of your workspace…if you want to modify the workspace, then hit B for begining and N for end, or drag the workspace handles. After Effects is not meant to play things back in realtime, such as an NLe would do.

I would serisouly consider reading the manual if you plan on effectively using AE, as this is pretty basic operations…

    Best regards

additionally, if you would prefer to view your ram previews from the current time marker, you can set that inthe time controls (window>time controls, check the option for ‘from current time’).

if you want to easily toggle between from current time and from beginning of comp, use the time control dropdown menu to set ‘ram preview options’ and ‘shift-ram previews options’, one with ‘from current time’ checked and one without. then, you’ll just use shift-zero or zero depending on where you want to render your preview to start from…

I am seeing a lot of similar posts from you.
    My advice is below.

    Research the following terms:
    Non-linear editor
    Compositing

Buy an After Effects book and read it or at least go through the help files.
You seem confused about a lot of basic points about compositing and editing in general, as well as using After Effects.

A few hours of research is going to be much more useful to you than posting here and waiting for responses. Once you understand how After Effects works, when you need an editing application instead of a compositor, and other issues—you’ll also be able to address your slow PC concerns.

    Good luck and happy reading.
Wikipedia isn’t a bad place to start.
