I have a 2 hour project(according to the track time code) in vegas.
This would be as yet .avi format.
I hear that 2 hours of video will fit on a 4.7 g disc. Yet if I take say 590 and divide it by 120 min, I get an average BR of 4.9 megabits.
Is this not quite low and will the clarity suffer at such a low rate?thanks

It’s not low at all. I’ve seen major Hollywood titles drop lower than 1.8Mb/s.
FYI, transmission (TV) MPEG-2 is in the region of 2.2-2.7Mb/s at the very best, most often much lower.
It all depends on the quality of your source, the quality of your encoder and your skill.
p.s. Don’t forget the audio – use AC3 rather than PCM to save space

Would you go any lower than this to get a larger file onto a single disc? How much lower? I several large movies to compress.
I assume 2 pass vbr would help with larger files.

It really depends on the job, the client and the quality of the source, but ultimately what sort of quality are YOU prepared to drop to..
2-pass VBR is certainly the way to go.
