Determining what compression settings were used
Posted by Sue Lawson on January 7, 2008 at 2:25 amAm I able to determine what compression settings were used on a project that I was given on a flash drive?
I keep thinking that there should be a way of doing this…
Thanks in advance.

January 7, 2008 at 10:35 amHi Sue,
It all depends what sort of wrapper the file has. If it’s a Quicktime movie, just open it up in Quicktime player then hit Apple-I (Ctrl-I on Windows) and up pops the main information.
If it’s something that can’t be opened in Quicktime Player, then give GSpot Codec Information Appliance a go. It handles a number of other wrappers and will tell you which codec was used and so forth. I should add that this is Windows only so far as I know.
Hope this helps,

November 1, 2011 at 4:49 pmThis is a great utility, I’ve been looking for something like this for a while now.
But, it’s a little out of date. Does anyone know of something similar that’s more current? I often receive client files (like today) where a simple edit is required, and knowing what compression was used on the original file would speed up the rendering process/take out some guesswork on my part.

November 1, 2011 at 5:37 pmTo look at bitrate over time I use Bitrate Viewer (Windows)
https://www.winhoros.de/docs/bitrate-viewer/and for codec and other metadata details I use Media Info (cross platform).
