what’s better than compressor?
Posted by Alexander Gao on December 31, 2005 at 7:15 amAre there any programs that will give me a better MPEG-2 compression than compressor 2?

December 31, 2005 at 9:29 pmIt’s the best I’ve tested for Mac.
The best I’ve tested overall is ProCoder on Windows.

December 31, 2005 at 11:48 pmCompressor 2, BitVice, MainConcept, and Compression Master 3.2 offer very good MPEG-2 encoding on the mac. It is difficult to say that just one encoder is the absolute best there is today, as I have seen different types of sources (interlaced, progressive, DV, film, animation, HDV) come out better between the encoders depending on what source was used.

January 1, 2006 at 12:33 amBen, are you saying Compressor 2 is the best performer on the Mac?
Really?

As Charles said, there are special cases where things could vary. For example, Main Concept is the only Mac encoder I’ve tested that correctly does motion search in chroma as well as luma, which can help in some edge cases, like test patterns.

January 1, 2006 at 11:08 pmI forgot to mention that there are demos available for all of the apps I mentioned. So the easiest thing to do is download the demos and test your source with them and then determine if an upgrade to Compressor 2 is something you need or could benefit from.

January 2, 2006 at 2:17 amHonestly, Ben, you are saying that compressor 2 is better overall than Bitvice or Main Concept for MPEG-2 encoding for DVDs? I know most compressor users have gone to a straight CBR encoding because Compressor had a problem with spiking in VBR encodes and I have seen them where a spike would choke a player. If an encoder can’t do VBR then it should be disqualified.
Compressor 2 does add quite a bit….but for just MPEG-2 FOR DVDs is Compressor still your best choice overall?
I ask again because I trust you!
