Hi, I have a severe poblem: the texture tag inside the the CINEMA 4D TAGS container seems to be broken or missing. It is marked with a “?”. What can I do to repair this?

I work with R17, but it is also gone in older or newer versions of the program. Does anybody know what is the cause of this? Now when I create a new material no texture tag is automatically generated. I can generate one by hand but it doesn’t work correctly. Please help help help me!!

The tag is automatically created when you drag a material onto an object in the object manager or viewport. If the tag has a question mark over it, that means there is no valid material referenced by the tag. You probably deleted the material that was previously associated. You can fix it by either dragging a material over that tag in the object manager and release on the icon or by selecting the tag, clicking the arrow next to the material field and then clicking on the material in the materials manager. It’s rare that you’d actually need to create a texture tag manually.

Hello Sam! Thank you for answering so quickly. The main issue is, that the texture tag has a “?” in the Cinema 4d tag folder, and looks and behaves like a material when dragged into the object manger. It has no little pattern flag on it.

I would like to insert a screenshot here, but I don’t know how to do this. They made it complicated here.

I want to fix this it. By the way it is the same with older or newer Versions of C4D.

Maybe you can give me a hint. THX anyway.

The icon with the “?” is the default (correct) icon for the tag and will appear this way in the menus and when added to an object without associating a material.

If you want to change the appearance of that icon you will have to edit the interface_icons file located within your C4D installation directory:
    [C4D_Base]/resource/modules/c4dplugin/icons/interface_icons_2x.tif

Dear Sam, again THX for your reply. But I’m sill wondering why this Tag had a pattern before and why it isn’t autamaticly generated anymore, when i add a new material. It drives me crazy! What happened? I think when I change the icon’s look, this will have no effect on its behavior.

When i add one manually it only works with spheres or URW mode. Not an effect with plane or cube mapping!

Thank you for your incredible patience in helping an old man in Germany. I’m very, very grateful tor that.

    Best whishes, wherever you are…

Are you referring to the material preview scene?

You can set the default preview scene in the C4D preferences > Material > Material Default Project
The will set the default for all new materials.

You can set the preview scene for individual material by right-clicking on the preview image in the material editor and selecting from that list.
