  • Aiming pupils on elongated cartoon eyes

I have a cartoon character in development with elongated eyes; SS attached.

Does anyone know how to include a simple black pupil, à la Goofy that can follow an eye controller on eyes that are not spheres, which I understand but won’t work on eyes that are this shape. Can the pupil be created on a material and the material itself be aimed… maybe!!??

    Thank you in advance

It depends on your mapping mode. If you use expresso to change the rotation of the texture tag with a spherical map its pretty easy. Other mapping modes will work but this might be the simplest for an egg shaped eyeball.

Well, that was an incomplete answer wasn’t it!
Sorry about that. Once you have that part of the expresso set up, then you can link another invisible object’s rotation to the rotation of the tag (get rid of the constant’s in the expresso and replace with the output of said object).
Then have that invisible object “look at” your tracking object.

    Hi Steve,

That’s just brilliant. I was coming to the conclusion that I needed to remodel with spherical eyes inside elliptical sockets, which would work but wouldn’t look as ‘cartoony’. It’s my first go at modeling beyond the really basic and I’m just about to have another go having learned a lot about the limitations of my geometry having rigged it and given it, as it turns out, a rather camp walk. I need a macho strut.

The generosity of you guys continues to amaze me, many thanks.

    Kind regards

    Stephen
