  • Can you have high resolution but still “soft” soft shadows”

I have a shadow dilemma where I increased the resolution of my soft shadows (1500×1500) in order to reduce flickering during animation, but now the shadows are too “sharp” and cast dark patches where they overlap. I messed with the bias, etc., but still have the problem. Is there a way to increase the resolution of a soft shadow while maintaining its softness?

You’ll have to use area shadows for additional control.

    Okay, thanks.

So, followup question–can Area shadows be made to be softer?

Sure, area shadow sharpness depends on the size of the area light, or if you’re using an infinite light, by the “infinite angle” setting in the light’s details tab.

    Got it–thanks! That’s very helpful.
