  • Blinking Gamma?

I’ve got a little animation going that has some HD footage in it (both ProRes and DVCPROHD) and when I render it out (either a RAM Preview, or actually rendering out the final comp), the video pieces randomly blink… They get brighter for one frame and then go back to normal on the next frame.

Anyone else having this problem? If so… has anyone found a fix?

I am on a mac, using Final Cut 5.1.4. The footage originated as DVCPROHD and AVCHD. The AVCHD footage was transcoded to ProRes (Log and Import on the one FCP 6 machine we have). I did a basic content edit in Final Cut and exported the sequences in their native format. It happens with either format. For the most part the Gamma seems to look like the original footage, except for the blinks…

Probably should have mentioned that the DVCPROHD footage came straight off of P2 cards for the import (via Import P2 in FCP 5.1.4

I had this problem and it drove me nuts. I turned off Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously in the Multiprocessing dialog and it stopped. I just flipped it on to test just now. Flicker is back. Now I flip it off
(toggle quality switch to flush ram) and problem is gone. I hope this helps you.

Now to figure out why AE footage imports into FCP with what appears to be a gamma and chroma shift.

I’ve had this problem as well with DVCPRO HD footage. My footage originates from DVCPRO HD tape. Generally shot with HDX900 and captured using an AJ-HD1400.

Generally speaking the footage was shot 720p and captured into FCP 6.0.3 with an AJA Kona 3 over HD-SDI using the “AJA KONA 3 – 720p 59.94 DVCPro HD” setup. Mac (obviously) running OSX 10.5.2 and it’s a 2 x 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon with 4GB of 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM RAM. AE is CS3 8.0.2.27 (dva: 2.0.0.127845) with QuickTime 7.4.5.

This same white/brighter flash blinking gamma rendering problem does not happen on every DVCPRO HD shot (clip/file), just some of them. About 50-60% of the time if I made each clip into it’s own comp and then used that comp in my timeline instead of the original clip that solved the problem. That did not work for all of them however and then I would end up getting weird blinks/flashes at other points later on.

At one point (during a time pinch) I just rendered out a few different instances of my timeline, and got blinks/flashes at different points – then I took the “best” parts of each render and re-assembled them into an FCP timeline for my final.

The problem got so annoying and frustrating that my new workaround was to convert all the shots from DVCPRO HD to Apple Animation codec. This file conversion doesn’t help condense the project file size during archiving, but it did solve all these blinking/flashing issues. This process adds a few minutes to the start of a new AE project, but in the long run saves a ton of time.

Worth noting – I tried going to a few other formats and I had the same blinking/flashing problem with other codecs as well. I don’t have a list of the ones I tried, wish I did.

Also worth noting, we have another AE machine in the office that was experiencing the same issues, however I do not work on that machine daily.

Did you try my fix? I swear it absolutely works unless you’re talking about another issue.

I have not tried it because the whole animation codec thing fixed it on the project I was working on and I haven’t started anything new since that I’ve had the problem on.

oh, ok. hey when you get a chance can you try it? I’d like to know if this solves the problem for others or if I just have a strange situation. Thanks. I’m glad you worked out a solution.

Same here – haven’t had a new project that I’ve had the opportunity to try it on. Currently working on a lot of projects that I’ve already converted to Apple Animation video, so I’m not sure if the Multiprocessing fix is working or not – I’ve never had a problem with Apple Animation.

Has anyone had these problems with other video codecs as well?

UPDATE: So far so good with the Multiprocessing fix. Thanks!!
