    I would draw splines for the laces and then use sweep nurbs.

    The one time I had to do a shoe, I used a tiled “shoelace” texture and it sold it pretty well. This should work whether you use splines/sweeps or model the laces. I modeled them so I could play around with the points.

    There are two ways I’ve done this in the past.
    Drawing splines up through the laces and sweeping them
    or
    I’ve extruded polygons all the way up for laces for.

    Either way has worked for me, to sell it create a tiled shoe lace texture.
