  Unfolding Cut-Out Doll Approach

  Hi,

  I need some help determining a good approach to create an extruded line up of cut-out people that hangs like paper. Overall my results are sloppy/undesirable and doesn’t feel like it is unfolding.

  Here is how i am doing it so far:

  1. create multiple cut-outs and individually rotate/scale/position them to unfold

  2. since each shape is different (man/woman/child), tweak PLA over a couple frames so when the “man” shape is revealed from behind the woman shape they have a similar outline

  Questions:

  1. Is there a better approach the unfolding (so it actually unfolds)?

  2. How do i build this knowing i need to add softbody or cloth dynamics so it feels like it is hanging/unfolding naturally? (Its not my first time using cloth/soft body)

  the paper is folded as an accordian fold in these things so it should unfold that way. Here’s a couple tries at it. 4967_cutouttrial.c4d.zip

  This is great Brian, thanks a lot. The parenting of each level makes a lot of sense…should have thought of that.

  Now that i’ve done that and have attached to a splinewrap, the accordion undesirably fluctuates from the spline as it unfolds.

  Do you have any suggestions on how to seat it against the spline so it is stabilized?

  in the SplineWrap/Object tab

  – delete the animation track for the Offset, set Offset to 50%
  – down in the Spline area check Fix Bounding Box
