  • Vray Self-illuminating an object

    Help! I’m VERY new to Vray and I can create a scene and create vray materials and lights, but I cannot seem to create a luminosity material that when applied to an object, acts as a light in the scene. In the Vray Advanced Material, I figured that it is what the ‘luminosity layer’ does, but it seems to not work. All my render settings are fine (I suspect, as everything else in the scene renders as expected). I tried adding a VrayLight tag to the object and that didn’t work either. Please help!

    Do you have global illumination turned on in VRay? Otherwise it won’t work.

    Global illumination is turned on. Man I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’ve been searching for tutorials all over the net and I can’t seem to find what I’m looking for.

    You mean global illumination is turned on in the vRay render settings, right? Not Cinema’s separate GI effect?

    If so it should work. If you post a simple scene I’d be happy to take a look.

    Can you NOT apply an illuminance layer to a 2D object, like a plane, because that’s what I’m doing. As soon as I applied the material to a 3D object, it worked!

    One thing about vRay is that it’s sensitive to normal direction. So if you put a luminous material on a plane, it will only emit light from the side with the polygon normals facing out.
