I’ve run into a bit of a problem I can’t seem to figure out and hope someone can help me.

I’ve created several precomps consisting of animated (in 3D space) text and images. Those precomps are nested in a final comp over a larger background image onto which I want them to cast shadows.

I have to collapse the precomps to keep the moves they have in 3D. However, it seems that my lights do not cast shadows from the precomps unless I deselect ‘collapse transformations.’ Then it works fine. But my moves are gone.

I’m stumped. I’m using more precomps than I usually do and I’m not as familiar with the way comps behave when you collapse them. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you collapse transformations, the material options on the pre-comp no longer apply. The material options on the layers inside the pre-comp are used. So make sure that all of the layers in your pre-comp are set to cast shadows!

That worked. I had to travel back several nested comps to get to the original. I thought I had already selected Casts Shadows on all the layers, but I hadn’t. Thanks!
