Hello. I’m trying to get the following texture onto a model of a football helmet shell, and can’t get any of the projection methods to work the way I need them to. The pattern of the texture does not need to be exact, just close. I’ve gotten it to look OK on certain parts of the helmet but never correctly on the whole helmet at once. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Here’s the texture…

Can you post an image of your attempt so far? Might help to see where the problem is.

Looks like spherical mapping should work.

It’s only work if you’d rather be doing something else…

Hey Steve, thanks for the response. Spherical mapping looks OK (with some tweaking) from certain angles, but it gets screwed up on the top of the helmet (the pattern gets smaller and comes to a point). Here’s what it looks like…

I think the issue on top of the helmet is related to the mesh there – if this helmet was started from a regular sphere you’d get that issue.

How about using UVW mapping and the texture tool to play with scale and positioning?

Main problems is I can never get all the “checkers” to be a uniform size throughout the helmet. UVW map still runs into problems.

Hmmm. Cubic doesn’t work either? Can you upload the model file and texture?

p.s. Is this for a still or animation?

Nope, cubic doesn’t work either. This is for an animation. Here is the helmet C4D file and texture, I only included the shell of the helmet to keep the file size down (and this is the only problem part which needs the texture). Thanks and let me know if you have any luck.

Seems to me that the mesh is a bit messy, so the texture is not being applied correctly. Do you have a lower poly version of the helmet?
