    This has to be something really silly but I place a cube, add a deformer such as twist, make the cube the child of twist and move the yellow dot.. the purple “cage” of the deformer moves – twists etc,- .. but nothing happens to the cube.

    Deformers work differently than NURBS. The deformer must be a child of the object or in a null, a sibling TO the object you wish to deform. You also need to make sure the primitive you are using has enough geometry to be deformed properly.
