I am modeling my ruger 10/22 carbine, and am having an issue where on one part of the stock, it goes from being rather square to a round (which is where you grip the riffle), and i have tried everything to get it to look like the picture. the shape i got from loading in “view settings/back/image, and then tracing around with splines and extruding. i know i did good with most of the shape, but no matter how you do it, i’m not sure how to round off the one part by tracing from an image. you can download the cd4 file here (minus the textures you don’t need anyways)from rapidshare (hey i did a good job so please download and have a look?$#):

cd4 file, (for about 60 days):

and the actual pictures (in zip file,3 jpeg images) of the riffle for reference:

please please please help, this is driving me crazy. i have everything almost perfect on this thing.

it looks like you would want to model it differently. Instead of (what appears to be) extruding an outline you’d probably want to use HyperNurbs (subdivision surfaces). It’s a lot easier to make the curved surfaces you need with just a simple control cage. Here’s a quick trial I did of part of the stock. If you don’t have much practice with them this is not a bad place to start.

thank you thank you, i will try and if it doesn’t look the way i want i can use your example model instead (just kidding i’m not that damn lazy). you’re the only serious response i’ve had. i take it you traced with splines around image then extrude, then put under hypernurbs and turn to polygon object?. or maybe not, you have a cube that you just extruded and shaped?, i’m not sure how you have a cube and did not have to trace around the image. and how else would you round up the part where your hand grips a little more. not to bother you, i’m just really picky in wanting to learn everything about modeling polygons. i’ve only got a year or so not full time into the software. most of my time is welding and machining but i love software too.
