  • Depth of FIeld – can’t make sense of it!

    Hi,

Forgive my newbiness, I’m workig on a simple little scene in C4d r10. I’m used to working with DoF with real cameras and in AE, however the setup for C4d is so totally alien to me. Would someone be kind enough as to explain exactly how Front Blur and Rear Blur parameters work? Whatever I do, my whole scene ends up out of focus.

I’ve set my Target distance to 323m as that’s the point I’d like in sharp focus.

Also, I find that specular highlights burn out horribly, some even producing horizontal lines that reach edge to edge. What con I do about that?

    Thanks in advance!

I did this little video tutorial a while back. Hopefully it helps: https://www.3danvil.com/tutorials/DOF_Effect/DOF_Effect.html

    Hi Adam,

    That’s a great tutorial, thanks!

I’ve rendered out a little test, it’s a simple model with some objects made with glass like materials. I have two lights in the scene. When I play my rendered file, I’m getting terrible flickering from the specular highlights – some actually appear as little disks with a black outline. Any clues how I rectify this?

    Thanks!

Were you using DOF in the render? If so then that could have something to do with it, because the built-in DOF doesn’t work through transparency. Also, geometry AA doesn’t work through transparency, so you might have to switch to Best AA. If those don’t take care of it I’m not sure what the probem is … I’d have to see the scene file.

Indeed I am using DoF. I’m outputting a test render using Best AA. Can you recommend a low cost alternative to the built in DoF?

If you have a post filter than can do DOF with a depth map you can use this trick for free:

“Place an Omni light at the camera position. Check Ambient Illumination and uncheck Diffuse and Specular. Turn off shadows and all other lights. Set the Falloff to Linear and the distance to the farthest thing away you want depth defined at 100% at. You can pull out the control handle on the light in the viewport interactively. Turn off all textures and render. To get depth maps where the foreground blurs just move the Omni Light to the center of focus and adjust the falloff. You can also play with Inverse Square and other falloffs to get more focused or different falloffs on the depth map. Whether they have any correlation to real lenses I am not sure.”

Otherwise, there are a couple of Cinema plugins. One is called ZBlur ( https://www.biomekk.com/index.php?cat=107&itm=26&page=1 ) and the other is called Endofin (I think).
