  • How to add a gradient to a pronged sphere

Hey guys, I am creating a virus. Imagine a sphere with every other poly extruded out a bit. I need to have the ends of the extruded polys start with one color and gradually fade into another color halfway along the extrusions until I end up with another color on the base of the sphere which has the unextruded polys. Is there a way to do this? I’ve tried messing with the gradient with no luck.

I even thought about making selections on the tips, middle and base and applying three separate textures to the selections but how would I fade the colors into one another without texturing every little extrusion….I can’t seem to achieve a “depth” to a material.

    Ideas?

    Thanks,
    Brian

I would use the gradient shader set to “3D-Spherical” mode. Set the start to 0,0,0, set the gradient’s radius parameter to be about the same as your object’s radius, and play around with the gradient colors.

Try using interactive render region as you adjust the shader. It’ll make your life a lot easier since you won’t be able to see the changes using the openGL display.

Bravo, Adam – I thank you greatly! I was about to put my head through the wall with this one!

    Works like a charm!

    Thank you!
