Hello, it’s been a while since I last posted a question here.

Anyway, I’m trying to create skin for some human character models, and I’ve been having some problems with the shading.
The first problem I had was the sharp edge between shaded and illuminated areas, and I needed a smooth transition instead of this. Well I’d solved that problem by layering a Lumas shader onto an inverted Backlight shader.
But that caused a second problem that I can’t seem to solve. The brightness of lights in the scene now controls the contrast of the transition between illuminated and shaded areas, instead of the total brightness as it should.

I was wondering if any of you knew of a solution to my second problem, or an alternate solution to my first problem?

    Thanks in advance
    – Michael.

I wouldn’t use Lumas and Backlight for this. First thing I’d do is adjust the contrast of the lights (details tab) to soften the shadow/highlight transition. If that wasn’t entirely successful I’d use a bit of ChanLum shader in the luminance channel (all lights must cast shadows for proper effect, or exclude non-shadow casters from ChanLum).

Thanks Adam, that gave me just the soft transition I needed!
