  • How to grow an extrusion with MoGraph or Sweep Nurbs?

Hi, I’m pretty new to C4D but coming along all right. To start out, I would love to get a handle on some of the basic stuff I’ve seen that attracted me to the program.

The biggest thing I’d like to understand is how this effect of growing the extrusion of text along a spline is achieved (sorry if this sounds odd, I’m not well acquainted with the language of c4d yet). The best example I’ve seen is at the start of this great demo reel I found. It sounds like MoGraph Spline Wrap is the best, and then put your spline into that. However, I don’t really understand how to apply that entirely and would really appreciate a simple step-by-step breakdown of how to make the text/spline/extrusion and then animate it to “grow” out of something like the dumpster in this demo reel.

If this has been covered in a tutorial I’ve not been able to find it, and I didn’t find it in a forum search either. Thanks so much for everyone’s help and I’d also appreciate any other tips about that opening part of the reel, as well as the “inspiration” clip that follows (I assume MoGraph can vary the extrusions based on the music?). THANKS!!!

That one is pretty straight forward. It uses Sweep Nurbs and animates the Growth option.

-Draw the spline you want to grow along.
    -Create your text spline
-Get a sweep nurbs (it in the same place as the extrude nurbs)
-Now place the text and the Spline as children of the Sweep (just like an extruder) The top child will be the shape (ie. text) and the second child will be the path (ie. your spline.)
    – Select the Sweep Nurbs and in the attributes manager (lower corner) there is a Growth option that says 100%. Beside that is a little circle. If you Control click that circle it will turn red indicating you set a key frame. Go to a new frame change the % and set another key frame.

Wow, that was easy. Except that the text was backwards! I set a -x for the height, start growth to 100%, and animated the end growth from 0% to 100% to get the text to look normal then. Seems like I’m missing a step that’s really easy. Maybe I’ll figure it out. But thanks so much for explaining the process to me, I’m glad to be moving along. Thanks!!!
