  • Rigging a null object for IK????

Okay so I’m a novice to say the least, trying to learn the world of 3d modeling and animation. I created a robot using a lot of splines and sweep nurbs and deformers and booles along with polygon objects both editable and un-editable. the method in which i went about doing this is probably not the most efficient but like i said I’m a novice, so i really don’t know any better way as of yet. Everything is a child of some other part of the heirarchy. and they are all within a null object. I was wondering if it is possible to create an ik chain for animation for this? It seems i can’t create an IK chain for a null object so i was wondering if there were some way of converting all the objects and what-not into something i would be able to work with? I understand the object has to be editable to create an Ik chain. when i was creating it i didnt plan for the future of animating it. Im guessing this is where i went wrong. But I feel like there has to be a way of creating complex models and animating it. right? any help would be appreciated! Thanks

If we are talking about a robots from matrix yes IK is going to be perfect in addition to contraints and a little xpresso. If you made a Wall-E looking guy you are not going to need IK at all. You will be looking more at xpresso and the range mapper.

Joints and IK tags are only one of many options for animating.
I posted a file with a couple basic examples. Maybe you can get your own ideas from it.

Well thanks for your time and help Randy! I was under the impression that making joints and bones was the only way to animate a character….but im afraid im a little in over my head here…I’m not familiar with using xpresso or the range mapper..and i was just using my little robot as an example but for me animating human-like movements and robot-like movements are one in the same in that i have no idea how to go about doing either of them!! LOL…but again thanks for your time Randy and if you or anybody else out there knows of any good tutorials that might be right up my ally I’d really appreciate any help!! thanks all!

Sorry i didnt mean to go over your head.
For an extremely simple overview of c4d animation Lynda.com is alright but is not free.

    other sources that may help:

Basic animation (key framing and F-curves tut. here:

    Good starter rigging tutorial:

Here is one for the range mapper. Its a good tutorial for all levels. If you dont want to use xpresso its still good to see.

This is a series of an entire Fish modeling, textures and rigging. (one of the best for rigging)
