Structural Dynamics
Posted by Kevin Sheppard on October 9, 2008 at 1:17 amHi guys,
I have two questions here coming from a video I watched: Cloverfield BTS
I would like to know:
1. What C4d plug-ins or separate apps are there for me to create the buildings and structures crumbling effects at 00:30, 2:20, and 2:34?
2. How do I make particles spawn from the collision of other objects as seen in the beginning with the head of the statue of liberty?

October 9, 2008 at 3:33 pm1. There are no plugins that will take a model and blow it up that convincingly, out of the box. There are a number of things you can try, however:
* use Cinema’s built-in explosion deformer. It’s pretty good and could be used in conjunction with particle effects;
* PhyRis or Silver Bullet plugin by Remotion. These are physics plugins, but they rely on existing objects, i.e., they won’t break up the building for you.
2. You can generate particles based on collisions with Thinking Particles. You would use an Xpresso Ray Collision node to turn on a particle generator at the moment of impact.

October 9, 2008 at 8:32 pmAlright… well truth be told, I haven’t had much faith in the explosion deformer, it tends to look a little fake for my taste. Then again, I could probably tweak some settings more then rely on AE for some composited explosions and debris.
Thinking Particles… I’m going to need more practice with. I wish it were as easy to use as Particular from Trapcode. Do you know of any good TP tutorial resources? Either that or other 3D Particle systems that work with C4D that are in league with TP?
I ask about the dynamics and the particle effects @ once because I’m working on a project where I make a building blow up. I have to create the explosion and all debris elements (dust, smoke, etc.) myself. My goal is to cut out as much roto and motion tracking work as possible and have everything to do with the building fully 3D. I don’t want to have to painstakingly rotate or track any or as little 2D elements as possible.

October 11, 2008 at 5:00 pmOk I just came across a cool tool for 3DS Max called rayfire – it does exactly what I need. Is there anything like this for C4D? If not a completely different program, then are there a few steps I can take to have an object destroy part of another and have the resulting fragments collide with other world objects?

October 15, 2008 at 6:01 pmMay be a wild goose chase but… How about creating some cubes ‘inside’ your building. Rough them up by subdiving the cubes and using a matrix extrude for the rough edges, and then use some funtions in MOGraph to scatter them about. I’m still in v.8 so this is totally off the top of my head. But instead of blowing up your building polys, maybe create some of your own?
Also, Andrew Kramer who does some tutorials here at the cow, has an intersting After Effects tutorial on an energy vortes that scatters debris about on a city street. VideoCoPilot is the site, if it’s ok. to mention it. That might help as well.
At least I hope I added some new ideas to the mix 🙂

October 16, 2008 at 8:25 amThis is turning out to be a headache… I’ll try what you said, but the ExplosionFX pieces are going to be the problem, they don’t collide or do anything realistically except explode… Ah well… then again, I could try to bring in the shatter effect from AE into the mix…
I’ll repost if anything comes up.
Thanks again!

October 18, 2008 at 6:43 pmSome pretty cool effects here using only cloth deformer.

October 19, 2008 at 12:03 amThanks for the response and the link, but I already explored that option and it didn’t quite work out 🙁
No worries, i’ll figure something out – thanks every1!

February 28, 2009 at 6:20 amI was just curious if you ever found out a solution to your problem. And if you did a quicktime or link to it.

March 1, 2009 at 3:52 amI’m sorry to say, but I didn’t find a solution in Cinema 4D. I bit the bullet and learned Max and the effect I’m aiming for is coming together nicely thanks to the Rayfire tool.
I appreciate all of your help, guys.
Now, these efects are for a short film i’m working on. As soon as it’s finished i’ll be sure to post up some vids of shot breakdowns and later maybe even some tutorials to help those who might be in need of it. Just my (intended) way of saying thanks to such a wonderful communnity 🙂

April 20, 2010 at 3:44 pmhere is a quick example of what can be achieved with cloth bloom and TP
