Though I’ve been using C4D for a good while, there’s something that’s always annoyed me bcause I don’t know how to do it. If I’m moving a spline or object around using the axis arrows to restrict movement in one direction, what happens when I want to zoom right in to accurately position it, but the axis goes out of the viewport? can I temporarily keep the axis centred in the viewport? I know when I select the move tool there’s a modelling axes option in the attribute manager, but I can’t seem to change the settings there, it’s all greyed out.

How about the Frame Active Objects, Frame Selected Elements (and their shortcuts) etc. in the Edit menu of whichever widow you’re working in? Or do you know those already and want something totally specific to the axis?

If you’ve upgraded to 10.5 there are some great new camera pivot features that allow you to place the pivot near the closest point with the touch of a hotkey, or even automatically.

If you’re using an earlier version there’s an option to pivot around a chosen object, such as a null, which you can move around at your convenience.

An example would be when I’m in say a side or front view, and I want to align a spline with another object by eye, but I want to be massively zoomed in. When I zoom in to look at the edge of the spline, I can’t use the axis to move it, as it’s now outside the window. I’m sure I’m just being dumb, and there’s a better way of moving things around by eye.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood your question. I think the best way to address your issue would be to use x/y/z constraints instead of the axis. At the top-left of the interface you’ll see the xyz icons with a cube/globe toggle icon to the right which turn on/off different axes and toggle between world and object restrictions.

For example, if you’re zoomed in super close and want to move a point only in X, but you can’t see the axis, toggle off the y and z icons. Now when you drag the point it’s motion will be limited to the x axis. Toggle the world/object coordinates icon depending on whether you want to move the point along World X or the object’s X.

thanks adam, I do use that technique, just wondered if there was one that involved less clicking! are there any shortcuts you can use to quickly lock onto either the X, Y or Z axes?

The default keys for toggling the axes are X, Y and (you guessed it) Z.
