Yes, depending on the file I have heard of some people having trouble with some files…

No, only Max can open Max files; you’ll have to export to some other format. FBX is probably the most versatile as it supports quads, cameras, lights, (some)materials, and animation.

I beg to differ, I open 3ds files all the time…

It should be able to open .3ds files, but .max files are proprietary and are only parsed via 3D Studio Max. There are trans-poly model exchangers, but they are not perfect. If you have a specific model with the .max extension, you could have a friend open it in Max and save it as a .dfx file which seems to be a pretty universal format. If you do this however, it is said that ALL of the texture and shader info is stripped from the file for compatibility sake.

Native Max files have a .max extention–not .3ds, which is a very simplified, triangulated format.

The point is you can open 3DS Max files, so if your buying models, ie off turbo squid… .3ds is enough support for max files. Otherwise its dxf or fbx….

Right, and the other point is, don’t buy a model in *.max format, because you can only open it with Max.
