Good question. As far as I know, “Holiday for Strings” is the classic example of the genre. It was used for the signature closing of the Red Skelton show, and was actually written in 1944 by David Rose.

Maybe it’s “50’s orchestral popular music”. That probably doesn’t help you much, but maybe Googling “Percy Faith” and “Andre Kostelanetz” might get you closer. Maybe adding “hygiene” or “muzak” might help. 🙂

Sounds a lot like the Lounge Music – for example Mondo Exotica is a good CD of the type.

No idea on royalty free versions of it.

    Hmm…

The music this most reminds me of, is the music played on the old Civil Defense info cartoons, starring Tommy the Turtle if I remember his name correctly – “Duck, and Cover!” (what to do in case of a Nuclear Attack.) Given that they were US Government issue, I’m sure some of the stuff on them has got to be under some sort of public domain license. Not sure exactly where you’ve find it though… some sort of government archive probably.

On the other hand, although it wouldn’t be royalty-free, I’m sure Richard Cheese has something appropriate on his “Lounge Against the Machine” album.

not really, but in searching other styles of music I came accross comedy music and found some other stuff that worked.

I don’t have real player (I absolutely hate it) so I couldn’t play stuff off that site, BTW.

Wouldn’t mind though if i did find a similar piece.

    Thanks.
